Stalemate is a 14 by 12 foot to-scale image of an M1A1 Abrams tank. It is printed on phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) paper and installed directly onto the wall in a completely darkened room. As the viewer enters the space, the image is initially not visible. As one's eyes adjust, the faint image of the tank appears. The image is first experienced as a flat, two-dimensional image, but shortly thereafter the viewer begins to perceive the image as expanding and materializing into a three-dimensional volume. Due to the scale and the quiet, contemplative nature of the light, this effect is quite phenomenological. Many interpretations when experiencing the installation can be arrived at, from the futility of war, to the innocence of bedroom-postered youth, to spiritual revelation, to pure aesthetic pleasure.
